Root Shoot offers base malts, specialty malts, and raw grains of excellent consistency and quality. Every bag is packaged by hand at our craft malthouse and available in 50 pound bags, 2,000 pound super sacks, or bulk order. Click any grain below to dig deeper.

Genie Pale

Light malty flavor with notes of bread and honey. More flavorful than a traditional 2-row malt base. An excellent all-around malt for any style beer. Malted from Genie variety 2-row spring barley.

Genie Pilsner

Light, clean, traditional, crisp malt. Straw-forward with bready undertones. Excellent base malt for traditional German Lagers, clear and hazy IPAs, Belgians or where light color is desired.

Lightning Pilsner

Magic Pilsner

Bred in Idahoʼs Magic Valley and malted from Magic 2-row winter barley variety, this pilsner malt delivers exceptional clarity, balance, and brewhouse performance. Versatile for many beer styles as a base malt.

Odyssey Pilsner

Clean, well-rounded, and highly versatile, with a very pale color. Brewer-friendly, it offers excellent extract potential for efficient brewing, while maintaining a balanced malt profile across a wide range of styles. Malted from Odyssey variety 2-row spring barley, which is a Zero-GN barley variety.

Buck 'Naked' Pilsner

Clean and powerful, this Colorado-grown naked barley showcases the pure expression of the grain. Ideal for distillers using on-grain fermentation for Single Malt or any spirit that would benefit from reduced tannin as well as lagers, Kölsch or pale ales.

Distillers Malt

High diastatic power and low kiln temperatures. Enzymatic malt best used for distilling. Malted from Odyssey variety 2-row spring barley, which is a non-GN producing barley variety.

Light Munich 4

Lightly toasted and mildly sweet flavor with a golden color. An excellent base malt for a variety of beer styles. A robust malt with strong enzymatic power, ideal for distillers crafting bourbon with depth and character.

English Pale Ale

Root Shoot’s version of a Maris Otter or Golden Promise base malt. Biscuity, nutty, and a touch of saltine cracker. Light toast flavor with a slightly darker color creates a dry, clean beer. Balances well with hop bitterness for crafting IPAs or any English-style beer.

Malted White Wheat

Sweet, bready, doughy, and malty. Versatile for traditional wheat beers and hazy American-style ales. Increases head retention and mouthfeel. Malted from Huffman variety winter wheat.

Moderately sweet, with notes of caramel, honey, and brown sugar. With an orange hue in color, this malt finishes with cracker and bread crust flavors. Malted from Genie variety 2-row spring barley.

Provides a distinct ruby color when steeped. Lends body to any craft beer due to some unfermentables. Floral aroma and earthy, walnut-like flavors of light caramel, and roasty strawberry cereal. Malted from Genie variety 2-row spring barley.

Traditional rye spiciness. Earthy and nutty sunflower seed flavors with subtle bread crust tasting notes. Great for brewing and distilling. Malted from Guardian variety winter rye.

A different take on typical malted wheat. Longer kiln time and higher temperature imparts a rich, complex, toasty flavor and mildly elevated color. Malted from Huffman variety winter wheat.

Chit Malt

Barely malted malted barley. Green, grainy & raw grass. Minimal flavor impact & meant to enhance body, head retention and haze stability through higher starch content and higher total protein.

Honey Malt

Grapefruit tart sweetness, finishing with a bread crust flavor and pretzel aroma. Reminiscent of honeycomb. Lower PH, resulting in a slightly acidic, raisin finish without being overly roasty or astringent. Very distinct malting process places Honey Malt most closely in a family with melanoidin malt.

Sweet, smooth, and flavorful with a pale straw hue. Enhances fermentability while adding a clean, slightly sweet backbone. Ideal for North American and Mexican-style lagers, pre-Prohibition lagers, cream ales, Bourbon and Whiskey. Malted from non-GMO corn.

Kilned to a slightly darker color than traditional Vienna malts, ours exhibits rich and toasty cereal flavor with hints of graham cracker and Grape Nuts. A mild honeysuckle finish with excellent clarity and rich color. Can be used as a base malt or complementary flavor.

Significant body, mouthfeel and a slight grainy character. Perfect for Stout, Porter, and other robust British style ales. A candidate for increasing protein haze, haze retention, and foam stability. Excellent addition to Hazy IPAs. Malted from Monida variety spring oats.

Higher protein, heritage soft wheat grain which is open-source and non-GMO. Full-bodied character is great for lower grist ratios where haze is desired, and higher grist ratios appropriate for Farmhouse, Hefeweizen and other wheat beers. Oland Wheat is prized for bread making characteristics.
